Fall is Freedom and Thankfulness

Fall. My favorite part of the year. The light changes and becomes softer, muted from summer’s harshness. The winds turn from the south to the north, bringing cooler temperatures. Not yet the unremitting chill from the arctic regions, but a crispness that reminds us to gather in our remaining crops. It puts a briskness into our steps and allows us to breath deep the freshness. Trees and flowers and grasses put on their showy colors in a final burst. The feel of the air; indefinable but deeply felt, invites us to come out and play. It resonates in my soul. I sleep more deeply in the fall. When I can, I put a blanket out in the grass and revel in the freedom to just enjoy.

Do you feel it? Today is a day to be thankful for life. We should be thankful every day, but some days we need to let go of the everyday, the mundane, and just be thankful.

“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if GOD cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need. “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” ” – Matthew 6:27‭-‬30‭, ‬33‭-‬34 NLT (also Luke 12)

We are blessed with glorious fall weather today. I pray that wherever you are, whatever you are doing, you will take a moment to step outside and give thanks to the LORD, the Creator, for life and breath. Breathe deeply and make a gratitude list, from having toilet paper and running water, to having adequate shelter and clothing and transportation. Remember how GOOD our God is, even in the the tragedies and losses of our lives. Amen.

How To Behave…..

In a discussion a few days ago, I was told that we are to follow the old Law, the law of the Ten Commandments. I don’t disagree with that statement, but the the answer Jesus gave takes it all and breaks it down very simply.

” ‘Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?’ Jesus replied, ‘You must love the LORD your GOD with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.’ ” – Matthew 22:36‭-‬40 NLT

If we follow His lead here, everything, every thought, would be taken away from the enemy. There would be no cursing or gossip, no thoughts of rage or irritation at those who offends you. I’m not there yet, and my thoughts are something I work on daily. Paul wrote this to help Timothy and other Christians, including us:

“So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. ….. Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to GOD when He judges the world.” – 1 Peter 2:1‭, ‬11‭-‬12 NLT

If the followers of Christ around the world could get this part right, what an example it would be for all of those who don’t know Him! Short and sweet; that’s Jesus. If we surrender our thoughts to the Holy Spirit, and we submit our lives to the LORD, think how we could influence others. It’s difficult to keep my tongue silent and my mouth closed when I want to speak badly of someone. Gossip rolls off my tongue with ease. Why not tell a “white” lie if it benefits me? Because sin is sin in GOD’S eyes. A lie is a lie, deceit is a lie; hypocrisy, jealousy, gossip, backstabbing, rumors….. all lies, and ALL lies, no matter how large or how small or so “white” are sin. Remember Lucifer, the enemy, aka Satan, the Father of Lies? He makes it so simple, and so attractive, to skip by the truth. If we truly love our neighbor, and treated them as we want to be treated, we would never tell the tiniest lie or any unkind word. Something to note here: our neighbor includes family, friends, coworkers, classmates…. any person outside of ourselves are our neighbors.

It’s impossible to fully love anyone else if we don’t first love God, and second, love ourselves. If I don’t like me, how well do you think I’m going to like – or LOVE – anyone else? I believe that’s a pretty important distinction. Whether you follow Christ or the enemy is absolutely your choice. For your sake, I pray you will follow Christ.

Filth? Evil?

“So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” – James 1:21 NLT

What is filth? What is evil? Everything is so skewed in our world… From the time of Adam and Eve, we have been hell bent on proving we are as intelligent as the Creator. We listen as the Father of lies fills our hearts and our heads with the promise that we are gods, equal to the Almighty. The liar assures us that there is no greater God than ourselves, and that we are free to do and live any way we choose. Satan is correct on one point: it is our choice to live how we we. What Satan doesn’t want us to know is that our Creator built free will into our DNA, because our LORD will never force us to choose Him. He wants us; He yearns for us to have a relationship with Him, and He will always leave it up to us. Have you ever loved someone so much that you feel a physical pull towards them, an emotional, even spiritual connection, only to have them choose someone else? If you have never experienced that connection, my heart hurts for you. If you have experienced it, and lost it – as I have – then you know the agony it causes. Anyone who has lost a child knows it. God loves us even more, more than we can comprehend, yet we routinely turn our backs oh His pure Love for the glittery fake the enemy dangles in front of us.

The only way to know truth is to fall back on God’s Word. If you have never read the Bible yourself, I suggest going online to http://bible.com and choose either the NIV or NLT version, and start reading in John, chapter one, verse one. It’s so beautiful. Throughput the history of the earth, God has employed poets and writers and other artists to share His Love for us, with us. It makes me so sad when I read comments on social media or in the news, or hear people stating that a Creator God is myth, and the Bible is a collection of stories written by old men – as if it were fairy tales. I cry for those people who have chosen the ultimate lie.

Jesus Christ was not a good man. He was not a prophet. He is either Who He says He is, the Son of the Most High God, or He is an insane man. History supports the Son of God. Archeological evidence points to the Garden, and every day brings forth new physical evidence to support the Scriptures. When I say we believe it, or not, at our own peril, I do not say it to be fear monger. I say with the strength of Scriptures and science. There is a heavenly, there is a hell, and there is ONE God over all. I pray you make peace with Him, before it is too late.

What Is Your Ministry?

“This is your ministry, and God has gifted you for this assignment: “A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.” (1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT)

As members of Christ’s body, we are his hands, his feet, his eyes, and his heart. He works through us in the world. But without the Love of Christ in our hearts, we are just additional noise in the world. I believe this to be true, but many days I wake up and wonder why I am here. What is my purpose? I read Paul’s words to the Corinthians and wonder what my ministry is, what purpose there is for my life. I guess that I’ve been searching for that purpose, that vocation, my entire life. I long to emulate Paul, and my Dad, who could turn any conversation into a lesson on Christ and how His Love could save us. Dad put Paul’s words into action with Christ’s Love in his heart and the enormous faith that he had.

“The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions…… This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” – and I am the worst of them all.” ” (1 Timothy 1:5-6,15 NLT)

I certainly fit verses 6 and 15. By the time I turned 18, I was turning away from the things of God, things I KNEW to be true, and spent my time in those meaningless discussions. I looked at the teachings of Buddha and other religions. I decided that Jesus was merely a good man, a teacher, and a prophet…. even though I knew better. Satanic things began to worm their way into my heart because of my rejection of Jesus. For years, I was stuck between the world and the faith in grew up with. Never underestimate the Power of PRAYER. My parents hated the way I lived, but they never stopped praying for me, and I know that their prayers are all that stood between me and the enemy. It took hitting bottom several times before I finally, truly, gave up and gave in to Jesus (I’m a slow learner sometimes, okay??)

There is a program called Celebrate Recovery that is offered in many churches, and it is based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholic Anonymous, only with Jesus added. It is not a program that is just for alcoholics, as I quickly learned. In fact, one statement stuck with me: “There are 2 kinds of people. Those who are IN recovery, and those who NEED recovery. “ I began going to support my husband, who was an alcoholic – among other addictions. Through CR, I discovered that I was an addict, too. I was a Codependent, my drug of choice was sex and requiring a man to be in my life. We call it a Relationship addiction, and it is a very real thing. There are many addictions of choice besides drugs and do alcohol. Yours could be work, shopping, food, cleaning; even exercise can be addicting. Cycling, running; these are very addictive. You (and I) can really take any day to day, “normal,” innocuous activity and turn it into an addiction. Actually, WE don’t turn it into an addiction; that would be the work of the enemy. Take something good, and turn it to evil.

My ministry seems to be in writing. I have spoken to groups on recovery and the need for Jesus in our lives, and I would love to do more speaking.

“The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. I thank Christ Jesus our LORD, who has given me strength to do His work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve Him, even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted His people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. Oh, how generous and gracious our LORD was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus. Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked. Hymenaeus and Alexander are two examples. I threw them out and handed them over to Satan so they might learn not to blaspheme God.” (1 Timothy 1:5‭, ‬12‭-‬14‭, ‬19‭-‬20 NLT)

Like Hymenaeus and Alexander, I was handed over to Satan to learn not to blaspheme the LORD. Unlike Paul, I blasphemed and persecuted without ignorance, but our gracious GOD forgives me my trespass and sin because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for me. Hallelujah! You can these words for the Truth that they are:

“But GOD had Mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of His great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in Him and receive ETERNAL LIFE. All Honor and Glory to GOD forever and ever! He is the Eternal King, the unseen One Who never dies; HE ALONE IS GOD. Amen.” (1 Timothy 5: 16-17 NLT)

What’s In A Name, Part 2

What are names, really? A word, or words, to try to identify ourselves or others. One dictionary defines ‘name’ –

noun
a word or set of words by which a person, animal, place, or thing is known, addressed, or referred to: “my name is Bond, James Bond.”

Names can be descriptive, and a name can be a noun or a verb. We all carry many names. Some we are born into, some that others call us, and those we use to identify ourselves. What names have you given yourself?

I have been given names, some good, some ugly, and some just mean: daughter, sister, mother, wife; aunt, niece, cousin, friend; coworker, boss; victim, survivor. I have been called cheater, liar, adulterer, thief; bitch, pretender; ugly, stupid, no good, back stabbed and deceiver. I have been some, and probably all, of those at some point in my life. These are my favorite names for myself: Forgiven, Blessed, Daughter of The Most High God, Follower of The Christ, Transformed, and Redeemed.

There are many names in the Bible. Adam = Man. Jacob means Heel grabber and Deceiver, and God changed his name to Israel, which means ‘God fights’, because he wrestled with the LORD. These are just two examples of names, but here are the most beautiful names I know:

“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” – Matthew 1:23 NLT

The name JESUS means ‘The LORD Saves’ (Matthew 1:21 NLT). He was – and is – called ‘Son of the Most High’ (Luke 1:32 NLT), ‘Savior’, ‘Messiah’, ‘Lord’ (Luke 2:11 NLT). He is called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6b NLT)

Jesus is the ‘LORD of Heaven’s Armies’. He is the Lamb of God, He is the Word of God, and He is KING of all kings and LORD of all lords (The Revelations of John). “And He [Jesus] also said, “It is finished! I Am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To ALL who are thirsty I will give freely from the Springs of the Water of LIFE.” (Revelation 21:6 NLT)

What are your names? I pray that your names include these names: Forgiven, Blessed, Child of The Most High God, Follower of The Christ, Transformed, and Redeemed!

Thanks go to John Lawton, my fabulous Edmond friend, for the cross.

What’s In A Name?

What name do you have? Daughter, son, sister, brother; Mother, Father, aunt, uncle; spouse, friend, enemy, boss, employee… there are many names to choose from, and many – most – of us have multiple names. There’s the name we were born with, and for some, there is the name, or names, we changed to later. I am a daughter and a sister; aunt, friend, partner. I have been a wife and a mother (although I think that any woman who has carried a child, even for a few days, is always thereafter a mother); I have been homeless; I have been an employee; and I have been a business owner and partner.

I have been a thorn in the side to many people, sometimes with deliberation and sometimes inadvertently. I am one of “THOSE” people.

Some of the names we carry will always stick with us. I will always be my parent’s daughter, and I will always be a sister. Being an employee, or even a friend, can change. We can lose the name of wife or husband through death or divorce. We can be disinherited by our earthly My favorite name is one that will never – got that, NEVER – change. I am a child of God, daughter of the Most High LORD. Despite the bad choices I made throughout my life, I made some good ones. The best was when I accepted the salvation of Jesus Christ. At that moment, I became the daughter of The King, and that will never change. Even though I turned my back on my earthly family, and my heavenly Father, I remained a daughter. God did not let go of me, ever. In the depths of my misery, deep in my heart I knew my Savior was there. The darkest nights, the deepest black you can imagine, there was a tiny flicker of hope that came through the darkness. No matter had hard the enemy tried to extinguish it, no matter how suffocating, that tiny flicker remained. It was difficult to see, but I knew it was there. Somewhere.

In recovery, we say you have to be sick and tired of being sick and tired before you will make a change. I like the way Billy Graham says it, too:

“In God’s economy, you must go down into the valley of grief before you can scale the heights of spiritual glory. You must become tired and weary of living alone before you seek and find the fellowship of Christ. You must come to the end of “self” before you can begin to live. The happiest day of my life was when I realized that my own ability, my own goodness, and my own morality were insufficient in the sight of God. I am not exaggerating when I say that my mourning was turned to joy, and my sighing into singing. Happy are they that mourn for the inadequacy of self, for they shall be comforted with the sufficiency of God. Lord Jesus, I know that apart from You I can do nothing of lasting value. Help me to come to the end of self and allow You to control the reins of my life.”

Psalms 34:18 “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

All we have to do is ask… Jesus said: “ANYONE who believes in Me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare,Rivers of living water will flow from His Heart.’” John 7:38

Are YOU sick and tired of your situation? There is only ONE answer, and ONE Healer. His Name is JESUS. Choose the Name above all names. Become a daughter or son of God. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Light, and it is only Him Who can dispel that darkness. I pray we’ll see you in the Light!

Oh My Country, America

“But GOD shows His anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about GOD because He has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything GOD made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities – His Eternal Power and Divine Nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing GOD. Yes, they knew GOD, but they wouldn’t worship Him as GOD or even give Him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what GOD was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the Glorious, Ever-Living GOD, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. So GOD abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about GOD for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things GOD created instead of the CREATOR Himself, Who is worthy of ETERNAL praise! AMEN. That is why GOD abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved. Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge GOD, He abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of GOD, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. They know GOD’S Justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.” – Romans 1:18‭-‬32 NLT

Paul said it; I concur. Oh my country, America! I grieve for you.

Nationality, Not Race

Peter, a disciple of Jesus and who was raised a law-abiding Jew, knew Jewish religion made it illegal for him to go into a Gentile’s house, so when Cornelius, who was a Gentile came and kneeled in front of him, said, “Stand up! I’m a human being just like you!” Then they went inside Cornelius’ house, and he told Cornelius and the others who were gathered there,

“I see very clearly that GOD shows no favoritism. In every nation He accepts those who fear Him and do what is right. This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel – that there is Peace with GOD through Jesus Christ, who is LORD of all. And He ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the One appointed by GOD to be the Judge of ALL – the living and the dead. He is the One all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who believes in Him will have their sins forgiven through His Name.” – Acts of the Apostles 10:26, 34‭-‬36‭, ‬42‭-‬43 NLT

Are you ready? Are you in the Light? Are you really? I believe that to honestly be in GOD’S Light, we have to let go of the prejudices that drive us. Jew or Gentile, black skin or red or brown or yellow or white or pink; Eastern European or South American or Aboriginal Australian; cowboy, redneck, or genteel southerner, we are all one in GOD’S Light. Peter said it perfectly when he said “I’m a human being just like you!” No one gets to pretend they are better than another person, regardless of color or circumstance.

“The One who is the True Light, who gives Light to everyone, is coming into the world.” John 1:9 NLT

Billy Graham said: “The world is stumbling in darkness from one crisis to another. The crises are getting worse and worse, and are coming closer and closer to home. Inflation, population explosion, hunger, dominate vast areas of the world. Jesus said, “I AM the Light of the world. Follow Me and give your life to Me and I will take you out of the darkness of this world, out of this confusion, out of this mess that you’re in, and I will give you peace and joy. A light will burn in your heart and mind that you never had before. I will command the Light to come on in your life.” ” (November 20, 2013)

“And let the Peace that comes from CHRIST rule in your hearts. For as members of ONE BODY you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” – Colossians 3:15 NLT

I ask again, are you ready to really live for Christ?

Discouragement

Discouragement weighs heavy on my shoulders. I am weary of this earthly battle with the enemy. My body aches; my emotions are spent; I am spiritually dry. LORD, O LORD, have Mercy on Your child.

I am not alone in this.

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in GOD! I will praise Him again – my Savior and my GOD!” – Psalms 42:5; 42:11; 43:5 NLT

Moses cried out to God in frustration. King David was discouraged and afraid, and cried out for deliverance and safety from his enemies. King Saul disobeyed the LORD. The phrophet Samuel cried out the the LORD in frustration.

“What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to His Voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the LORD, He has rejected you as king.” – 1 Samuel 15:22‭-‬23 NLT

The LORD GOD has no patience for disobedience in His children, but He is faithful to comfort us and protect us. He answers every cry of pain, every prayer of anger and hurt and dismay. He hears us.

“But you, O LORD, are a Shield around me; You are my Glory, the ONE who holds my head high. I cried out to the LORD, and He answered me from His holy mountain.” – Psalms 3:3‭-‬4 NLT

Even Paul, who may be be the most well known Apostle, struggled with disappointment and discouragement at times. He suffered from an unknown physical condition, and asked the LORD to take it away. Jesus cried in the garden, begging His Father to take away the punishment He was about to receive. His disciples who were with Him disappointed Him, falling asleep instead of praying as He had asked them. Every human who has ever lived, from Adam and Eve to the newest newborns, has, or will, fave discouragement and disappointment. When we try to handle it on our own, we fail dismally. Financial stability won’t keep you from being discouraged. A partner, a family, or children, won’t keep disappointment at bay.

Why am I so discouraged? Why am I so sad? I blame it ALL on the enemy of everything good, the father of lies, and the originator of everything wrong and evil in the world. There is one solution to this, and His Name is Jesus. In the words of Paul,

“And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of Salvation. And this Hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly GOD Loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His Love.” – Romans 5:4‭-‬5 NLT

Take the discouragement and move into encouragement today.

“Don’t be afraid, for I AM with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I AM your GOD. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with My Victorious Right Hand.” – Isaiah 41:10 NLT

AMEN.
