Loving the way Jesus teaches – Is it even possible? 

​”Love must be sincere.

Really??? Does God expect us to be all that? Well, the short answer is yes. The human answer has to be no, because we are flawed and fallen beings who are incapable of having the sincere, loving existence God originally planned for us. (Thank you, Adam and Eve!) 

God gave us each free will so that we all individually responsible for our decisions, good, bad, and ugly. I could go line by line and point out every verse that I have ignored or broken in order to have my own way. As I move through life and it’s myriad of interactions, I am discovering that there actually is some wisdom in these words. What a shocker!

While I was growing up, my Grandma and Mom would say things like “You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” Not my thing. I preferred sarcasm and barbed words to kindness. Judging people. Revenge…. oh, yes. Gossip was the rule instead of the exception, and you know what?  Being all that didn’t bring me any peace or satisfaction, ever. Smiling and thanking someone who is being hateful or in your face really throws them off. 

I find that the more I strive to emulate Paul’s words and Jesus’ commands, the more peaceful and stress less  (is that even a word??? 😎) my life becomes. I still don’t get everything I want, and people are still rude and thoughtless, and sometimes just plain mean. It’s always my choice on whether I react, or respond, just as it is yours. We don’t know what is going on in that person’s life when they do things we don’t want to deal with, just as they have no idea what is going on in ours. 

Choice. It can be incredibly freeing, or you can tie yourself up in your misery and take it out on everyone else. Blessings come when we are thankful!

I Will Trust In You

​”Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge!

I’m sitting outside in the backyard, contemplating God’s beautiful creation. He is so good to me! I was reading a post from a friend who’s ex is refusing to bring her children home after his visitation. I am blessed in not having that drama in my life, but there have been plenty of other dramas to deal with. There will be more, I’m sure, because the enemy has temporary control over the earth (just until Jesus returns!!). I remember during a particularly difficult period as I was driving home, I was crying from frustration and exhaustion, when I felt the physical presence of the Holy Spirit in the car with me as He touched my shoulder and said “I am with you.” There’s a song that Lauren Daigle sings and the chorus goes like this:

“When You don’t move the mountains

I’m needing You to move

When You don’t part the waters

I wish I could walk through

When You don’t give the answers

As I cry out to You

I will trust, I will trust

I will trust in You”

The enemy makes it REALLY difficult to rest in the trust we have in Jesus. When we can’t do anything else, we pray. We can’t see God’s plan and it is incredibly frustrating to keep finding ourselves in the dark valleys. I have to watch myself and remember that no matter how bad it gets, God is still in control. My heart hurts for all the pain being suffered today by so many. Prayer is always the BEST thing we can do for those hurting! Can I get an Amen!!

Here Come the Judge

Man, this is HARD. I think I know right from wrong, and then, just when I think I am making strides towards being the person God wants me to be; just when I feel like l’m actually beginning to reflect Christ in my life, I see or hear something and I jump to judge. Ugh

Terrorists – “Shoot them all and let GOD sort them out.”

Rudeness, disrespect (includes people who use inappropriate gestures and foul language) – “Oh no you didn’t!” Just let me crawl up in their face and teach them a lesson in kindness.

Flat out meanness, criminals, and cruelty – Put them in stocks on the village square for a week without shelter or food, and allow bystanders to throw rotten fruits and veggies at them.

Fat people; trash (white, black, red, yellow… trash is trash) – Get a job! Quit being lazy and get off your a**. Clean up your house and yard. Do something productive. 

I’m not opinionated, right? (Okay, you can stop laughing now!) Judging others is natural. Normal – but just because it’s normal does not make it right. I want to point out all of the issues of others so I don’t have to look at mine. Now that is normal and natural to our human nature! 

LORD of my life, Savior. You are Awesomeness personified. Beautiful, perfect Father. I ask for forgiveness for my judgmental attitudes, and pray for Your contentment within my life and thoughts. I am not judge and jury over any human, including my own thoughts and actions. You alone are GOD. Bless my neighbors and friends and family today, O LORD. I lift up those people who are reeling from the tragic events that seem to be popping up more and more frequently. You promised that by accepting Jesus as Savior, we would never be alone again. Thank You for keeping that promise, and for covering us with Your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Going All Political 

I’ve been staying off of social media for the past few days because of all the negative news and posts. I know there are a lot of positive posts and people are coming together, too, but even within many of the “positive” messages there seems to be an underlying hatred. Our beautiful country is being destroyed in a systematic fashion by both those in power and in radical fringe groups. God – not Mohammed, not Buddha nor Mother Earth or any other god – God the Almighty, Creator, was at the center of the founding of our nation, and He is being pushed aside for all other gods. Professional athletes and musicians are treated with more respect than we give almighty God.

People sit in lines and even camp out in parking lots in order to be first in line for the best deals and the best tickets…. Have you EVER seen anyone waiting in line for the church doors to open? America, without God, we are nothing. This nation is heading for an EPIC fail. Our so-called leaders, from small town mayors to the White House continually undermine the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We the people are having to go into survival mode. 

It is so easy to fall into the hatefulness and prejudice that is being preached from Washington, but we as Christians MUST overcome those emotions and attitudes. Yes, I know how easy it is to say, and what a difficult challenge to do. It can only happen when we follow the Words of Jesus. Love the ones who want to hurt us, and PRAY for them. That is NOT what I want to do!

Father God, LORD of ALL, have Mercy on me. You are The Almighty; The  Forgiving and Merciful GOD. Help me to leave Judgment to You, and with Your help, I will forgive and pray for those who would do me and this great nation harm. I pray for clarity and for a contented spirit. It is only with You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that I can have peace in this world. It is only through You, LORD Jesus,  that this nation, and our world, will ever have peace. Thank You, Father God, for Your continued presence in my life. Amen.

ALL Lives Matter

​Black lives. Blue lives. Red lives. Brown lives. Yellow lives. White lives…..

ALL lives matter to God! 

April 4, 1968 – Robert Kennedy gave this speech in Indianapolis, Indiana, after he received word of Martin Luther King’s death. The words are so appropriate for us regarding the events of the past weeks and years.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,

I’m only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening, because I have some — some very sad news for all of you — Could you lower those signs, please? — I have some very sad news for all of you, and, I think, sad news for all of our fellow citizens, and people who love peace all over the world; and that is that Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in Memphis, Tennessee.

Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day, in this difficult time for the United States, it’s perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who are black — considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people who were responsible — you can be filled with bitterness, and with hatred, and a desire for revenge.

We can move in that direction as a country, in greater polarization — black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand, and to comprehend, and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand, compassion, and love.

For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with — be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, but he was killed by a white man.

But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make an effort to understand, to get beyond, or go beyond these rather difficult times.

My favorite poem, my — my favorite poet was Aeschylus. And he once wrote:

Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.

What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love, and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white or whether they be black.

So I ask you tonight to return home, to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King — yeah, it’s true — but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country, which all of us love — a prayer for understanding and that compassion of which I spoke.

We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We’ve had difficult times in the past, but we — and we will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; and it’s not the end of disorder.

But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land.

And let’s dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world. Let us dedicate ourselves to that, and say a prayer for our country and for our people.

Pray like this:

In church, it seems like we like to make our prayers all flowery and sweet, and many times we use them to gossip about people  I think we need to take a collective step back and look at the example Jesus gave us. Simplicity is so beautiful. We need to first praise and glorify our Lord, confess our own sins, and only then can we ask for and expect God to listen to our requests. 

 “Our Father in heaven, may Your Name be kept Holy. May Your Kingdom come soon. May Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.” 

Then Jesus added this: “If you forgive those who sin against you,  your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” – Matthew 6:9-15 NLT

Personally, I’m working on the forgiving others part. For some of the people I need to forgive, it’s on a daily basis because of the depth of the hurt. I have to daily pray the prayer Jesus gave us to ask for deliverance from temptation, as well as asking for His help in forgiving the ones who hurt me…. and ask that I receive forgiveness from those I have wronged. 

“Life hurts, and then you die.” My sarcasm was a shield to keep me from feeling. It works to an extent, but eventually the feelings have to be dealt with. Life does hurt, and eventually we will all die. That’s fact. I don’t have to wallow in the misery unless I choose to. We all have our moments when we need to feel the pain in order to move on and begin the healing process. Forgiveness, like life, is ongoing. It’s not instant, and it’s hard. It is also not optional, unless you want to spend your life locked up in a bitter, angry shell. I found out that when I don’t at least attempt forgiveness, my body rebels and acts out with headaches and indigestion and other complaints. When we refuse to forgive, we give that person or persons the ability to hurt us over and over and over. I don’t want anyone having that power over me ever again. Even where I am incapable of forgiveness, my Father can forgive through me…. and that helps give me deliverance!

I try to let my prayers reflect what Jesus taught us instead of using the time to whine and complain and gossip. They don’t always happen that way though! Sometimes I find that all I can do is groan, and that’s okay because the Holy Spirit hears my need and carries it to the throne. Sometimes all I can do is say the Name of Jesus. The important thing is to pray. Talk to God like He is sitting next to you – because He is. Because He IS. Amen.

On Mission: excerpts and thoughts 

“But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

“….. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.” 

“In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”  This proposal pleased the whole group….  So the word of God spread. What does this have to do with us? I’m not a Jew or of Jewish descent, so how does this work in my life and the life of the church today? This passage tells me that life within a church is messy, and it especially points out that it is not the pastor’s job to fix everything.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.  But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” –

As a Christian, we are each called to do our part. If there is an issue that we recognize, or a thing that we know needs to be done, we don’t need to wait for the church leaders to fix it. As we are the church, we should be taking care of each other. One body, one spirit; multiple pieces. Whatever congregation or name or location, all Christians are parts of the same body. Just as our bodies have many parts and appendages, so does the church. Just as our Lord, we need to be modeling compassion and grace; not judging by appearances. Whether young or old, hipster, cowboy, millennial or baby boomer; homeless or Gaillardia, we are one in Christ Jesus.  

“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” – Psalm 103:8‭-‬12 NIV

Perfect Peace

The morning after a rain shower is so sweet. The breeze is cool and there’s still enough shade in the side yard to sit and enjoy being outside in God’s creation. We have groceries in the house, and the bills are paid; we’re all  (relatively) healthy; life is good. It is well with my soul.

But what about when it is all turned upside down? Financial struggles, health issues, losing our livelihood or our home, death…. can we be like Job? Will I be content if I lose all that is dear to me? In the past, I have lost nearly everything – home, belongings, animals, family, health. My physical body was abused and violated. I was anything but content, and I was screaming at God. If I were to face those things now, I want to say I would be like Job (read his story!) or Horatio Spafford (story below) or Fanny Crosby (blind since she was 6 weeks old) or Helen Keller (an amazing woman ), but I don’t know. I pray I never face those kinds of catastrophic loses again, but if they should occur, I pray for God’s peace to wash over me.

My Dad had all kinds of physical issues that should have left him incapacitated when he returned from WWII, but that didn’t stop him. He pastored into his 70’s and raised a family with the help of my beautiful mother (Phyllis Henry) until he became bedridden – and even then, unable to care for His own broken body, he ministered to everyone he came in contact with. I can still hear him singing this song with all of his heart…

This hymn was writ­ten af­ter two ma­jor trau­mas in [Horatio G.] Spaf­ford’s life. The first was the great Chi­ca­go Fire of Oc­to­ber 1871, which ru­ined him fi­nan­cial­ly (he had been a weal­thy bus­i­ness­man). Short­ly af­ter, while cross­ing the At­lan­tic, all four of Spaf­ford’s daugh­ters died in a col­li­sion with an­o­ther ship. Spaf­ford’s wife Anna sur­vived and sent him the now fa­mous tel­e­gram, “Saved alone.” Sev­er­al weeks lat­er, as Spaf­ford’s own ship passed near the spot where his daugh­ters died, the Ho­ly Spir­it in­spired these words. Negative Nellie has a Pity Party

Are you a “Negative Nellie?” Are you having a pity party today? God knows I’ve done my share of both. I have argued that the sky wasn’t blue just to be negative. I would complain just to be complaining.  Going out to eat with a Negative Nellie, going on a trip; running errands; playtime, worktime, watching TV or a movie… What a drag for a Negatve Nellie’s  companions!

The food isn’t hot enough, the meat is undercooked, the meat is overcooked, the veggies are gross. Bleh. Service is horrible. Stupid drivers, stupid road planners, too many signs, not enough signs, gas is too high, augh! pot holes. Don’t leave the vehicle running because it wastes gas. Don’t turn off the vehicle, it gets too hot. Prices are too high in the store; merchants are gouging us. It’s MY toy! It’s MY game. She’s copying my work and taking credit for what I’ve done. He’s picking on me. Life isn’t fair…. movies are stupid and the theatres are ripping us off. Idiotic TV shows. I’m broke; there’s never enough money. (Feel free to add your own comments!)

We are all guilty of complaining, and I think that it can occasionally be justified if there is a legitimate reason. What are you going to do about it? I was told once (okay, several times!) to go ahead and have my pity party for the next 5 minutes, and then MOVE ON. (Thank you, Vicki Robinson and Amy Wilson!)

Living in a negative world is exhausting. Not only does it wear out Negatve Nellie physically, it is emotionally and spirituality taxing. It takes a definite toll on our physical bodies and manifests in headaches, ulcers, unexplainable pains, and more. Being negative separates us from God, too. It’s very difficult to praise God and worship Him, when we are wrapped up in our pity party. It brings down the people we are around. Instead of hating everything, try finding something positive to focus on. What a difference in attitude it makes!

When I find myself locking in to negativity and starting a pity party, I start constructing a gratitude list. It might seem like everything is against me, but I can promise you there is always something to be thankful for. If I just can’t bring myself to be delighted in Christ Jesus at that moment because I’m mad at Him, I can still find something to put on my list – as my friend Katy Britton says, “you can always be thankful for toilet paper.” Small, but mighty.
