And Every Knee …

“Trust in the LORD with ALL your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His Will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” -Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

The reason we have Christmas today is because of a Baby Boy Who was born over 2000 years ago. It’s a time to celebrate His birth. Scripture tells us:

“Therefore, GOD elevated Him to the place of highest honor and gave Him the Name above all other names, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” – Philippians 2:9‭-‬11 NLT (http://bible.com/116/php.2.9-11.NLT)

From the carol “We Three Kings” –

“O Star of wonder, star of night

Star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding

Guide us to thy Perfect Light.

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain

Gold I bring to crown Him again

King forever, ceasing never

Over us all to reign.

Glorious now behold Him arise

King and God and Sacrifice

Alleluia, Alleluia

Earth to heav’n replies,

O Star of wonder, star of night

Star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding

Guide us to thy Perfect Light!”

Can I just say how much I love singing and hearing Christmas carols? One of my favorite memories is of being at my parent’s house with my (baby) sister and her family, and my niece simultaneously singing “Ave Maria”. I know, it’s not a Christmas carol, but oh my goodness, how beautiful are the words and the music, especially when sung by my niece Erin Marie!

“Maria, full of thanksgiving

Maria, full of thanksgiving

Maria, full of thanksgiving

Ave Ave God

Your God

Be blessed among the women

And blessed

And blessed be the product of your womb

Your womb, Jesus.

Ave Maria.”

Jesus is the reason we have this season. He is the reason it is called “Christ’s Mass,” or as we say it, Christmas. It’s a time for us to drop the busyness and look to Jesus. The Wise Men, or the Magi, dropped what they were doing when they saw the star. ⛤ They headed out on journey of unknown length and difficulty. All that they were focused on was finding this baby boy King Who was born under the star.

These Magi, wise men from many different backgrounds and from great distances, traveled hundreds of miles and faced untold obstacles, kept going so that they could kneel to a young child, a child born in the most humble circumstances. They brought treasures to Him that were fitting for a king, and they worshipped Him. As is so often with truth, it is hard to believe. First, that any being would volunteer to leave the indescribable Joy of heaven to live on earth, let alone endure the torture and gruesome death on a cross; second, that wealthy scientists and scholars would leave their comfortable existence to undertake a long, difficult, and uncertain journey in order to bow at the feet of a child…. and yet, that is exactly what these men did.

Are you ready to drop everything and worship the King Who was born in a stable? ALL things are made possible through Him! 🕯🕯🕯

“O, Come let us adore Him, Christ, the LORD!”

Time to Get Real

This is a time of year when many people go out of their way to share hope and blessings on those less fortunate. That’s a wonderful thing! A friend shared verses 9-10 this morning, and when I looked at the entire passage, it struck me that it is very appropriate to share right now. I know so many people who have no problem cursing when things don’t go their way – it could be an inconsiderate coworker or a driver being reckless. It could be an unwanted phone call or it could be something that comes in the mail. There doesn’t even have to be a reason; the words can be a “normal” part of their language. God knows how often I have cursed, and how sorry I am now for the bad witness because of the words.

“1. Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly.
2. Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
3. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth.
4. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong.
5. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
6. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.
7. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue.
8. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison.
9. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God.
10. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!
11. Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water?
12. Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.” – James 3:1‭-‬12 NLT (http://bible.com/116/jas.3.1-12.NLT)

It’s so important how we conduct ourselves when we claim Christ. People are watching and judging. I am not perfect. I gossip and I slander and there are people about whom I have nothing good to say. In other words, I am wholly and imperfectly human. That said, I make a conscious effort to not do those things, most of the time. I will be judged, ultimately, by God. Listen to this song “Awake and Alive” by Skillet:

I’m at war with the world and they
Try to pull me into the dark
I struggle to find my faith
As I’m slippin’ from your arms
It’s getting harder to stay awake
And my strength is fading fast
You breathe into me at last

I’m awake I’m alive
Now I know what I believe inside
Now it’s my time
I’ll do what I want ’cause this is my life
Here, right here
Right now, right now
Stand my ground and never back down
I know what I believe inside

I’m awake and I’m alive
I’m at war with the world cause I
Ain’t never gonna sell my soul
I’ve already made up my mind
No matter what I can’t be bought or sold
When my faith is getting weak
And I feel like giving in
You breathe into me again

I’m awake I’m alive
Now I know what I believe inside
Now it’s my time
I’ll do what I want ’cause this is my life
Here, right here
Right now, right now
Stand my ground and never back down
I know what I believe inside
I’m awake and I’m alive

Waking up waking up
Waking up waking up
Waking up waking up
Waking up waking up

In the dark
I can feel you in my sleep
In your arms I feel you breathe into me
Forever hold this heart that I will give to you
Forever I will live for you

I’m awake I’m alive
Now I know what I believe inside
Now it’s my time
I’ll do what I want ’cause this is my life
Here, right here
Right now, right now
Stand my ground and never back down
I know what I believe inside
I’m awake and I’m alive

Waking up waking up
Waking up waking up
Waking up waking up
Waking up waking up

Embraced

“The High and Lofty One who lives in eternity, the Holy One, says this: “I live in the high and holy place with those whose spirits are contrite and humble. I restore the crushed spirit of the humble and revive the courage of those with repentant hearts.”” – Isaiah 57:15

THIS is what Christmas is all about! We get on our soap boxes and put on our superior attitudes, and what does it accomplish? A temporary ego boost? That fleeting feeling that we are better than someone?

“The High and Lofty One who lives in eternity, The HOLY ONE!” He, the Holy One, Jesus, came to earth to be born in a stable and to die a brutal death on the cross to show us how much He cares. Jesus wasn’t stingy with his feelings or His meager belongings or even His Mother. He shared EVERYTHING, and most importantly He shared His life-blood so that I could have LIFE eternal  with Him.

I find it difficult to share anything,  let alone EVERYTHING. I would lay down my life to save my family, but I struggle to embrace them. Being a friend means reaching out and caring and listening. It’s a real struggle for me to do this. It’s not because I don’t care,  because I do – VERY much. At times I envy people who make it look so simple and effortless. Like Sheldon and the boys (AND girls! – on the TV show The Big Bang Theory), I find myself struggling when interacting with others, whether it is family and friends,  or co-workers, or strangers. I try to cover by making jokes or being sarcastic, and that doesn’t work in most situations! I am the wallflower in social gatherings because it is quite literally painful for me to have to reach out to people I don’t know. At work, I try to keep my head down and focus on the task at hand. I’ve been told to “keep it genuine” or “light and polite.” I’ve been called rude and heartless. I care; I really do. My empathy and comfort -giving genes seem to be lost in the maze of my brain. If you don’t understand, watch The Big Bang Theory and Sheldon.

I’m sure there will be people who read this who will say I’m just making excuses. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. God restores me and He revives my broken spirit. Whether at work or play, I depend on Him to restore me. I couldn’t do anything without God! The hurt, the broken, the lost, and the lonely are all around us among our friends and families and coworkers. it might be the sales person or the cashier when you are shopping.

As hard as it is for me to reach out to people, I’ve found that the more I lean on the LORD for His understanding, it’s becoming a little easier all the time to be patient with slow lines and bad traffic. I can be pleasant to the cashier, and I’m not quite as paralyzed in social gatherings as I have been in the past. Jesus came here to embrace us all. Seems the least we can – should – do as His followers is to show a little kindness and offer His Grace to others, especially now as people are going a little crazy with the whole commercial holiday craze. Work with me to put a little CHRIST back into Christmas this year.

I Am Weak

“Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT (http://bible.com/116/2co.12.9.NLT

Remember singing this?

Jesus Loves me, This I know

For the Bible tells me so,

Little ones to Him belong,

They are weak, but He is Strong.

Yes, Jesus Loves me,

Yes, Jesus Loves me,

Yes, Jesus LOVES me,

The Bible tells me so.

I know Jesus Loves me. I know this, because I have witnessed it again and again in my life. I know that His Grace has saved me countless times from consequences of my thoughts and actions – Literally saved my life. That is not to say that I haven’t had to deal with consequences. My best thinking is what’s called stinkin’ thinkin’ in recovery programs, and stinkin’ thinkin’ often leads to some drastic consequences .

I know Jesus Loves me because I saw how my parents lived that love in their lives. I know He Loves me because of the compassionate love pastors and laypersons have shown me through Christ Jesus. Have you felt that Love in your life? We so often miss Him, because we have remained too busy reminding ourselves of how inadequate we are. It’s true, we are completely inadequate to show God’s Love to others. Circumstances and consequences break us. Jesus puts us back together so that His Light can shine through the cracks and holes where we are broken and incomplete.

“And this is God’s plan: Both Gentiles and Jews who believe the Good News share equally in the riches inherited by God’s children. Both are part of the same body, and both enjoy the promise of blessings because they belong to Christ Jesus.  God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was his eternal plan, which he carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord. When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father,  the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.  I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.” – Ephesians 3:6‭, ‬10‭-‬11‭, ‬14‭-‬21 NLT (http://bible.com/116/eph.3.6-21.NLT)

What a great reminder of God’s Love!

How Does God Love Me?

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806 – 1861

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of being and ideal grace.

I love thee to the level of every day’s

Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.

I love thee freely, as men strive for right.

I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.

I love thee with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,

I shall but love thee better after death.”

This is such a beautiful sonnet, and God loves us even more! 1 John 4:9-10: “God showed how much He loved {He LOVES us!!} us by sending His One and Only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is REAL Love – not that we love God, but that He loves us – He sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins!”

How much better can it get? I am so spoiled… no, make that blessed! Seriously. This morning I’m talking about my little dogs, because I can. 😉 Every morning, our routine is this. They wake me up with kisses (not everyone gets kissed awake!!), then they go out while I turn on the coffee. I feed them – the little black boy sits up on his back legs so prettily while he’s waiting – then I get my coffee, and by then the little brown boy is dancing at my feet, anxiously waiting for me to go sit on the couch. Really. Dancing. As soon as I sit, he is climbing into my lap to be covered in his blanket, while the little black one curls up on my side. (He’s my shadow. Wherever I go in the house, he’s right there with me.)

Many of you think I’m nuts (not to mention any names, sis, heeheehee) but others understand what I’m talking about. I have never been a “little” dog person. My preference runs to bigger ones – 40 to 80 pounds – but these two found me and I wouldn’t change it. My big boy Rascal used to get in my lap, too, but at at 70+ pounds, about all that fit was his head!
Why am I talking about dogs today? Because they are all about love. Because dog, turned around, spells God. Love, unexplainable, without boundaries, total love. No matter if I were to mistreat them, or how long I leave them, they are always there waiting on me so they can show me how much they love me and missed me. Like the prodigal son, they are there with no judgement or condemnation. It’s pretty amazing when you think about it.
“We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!” – Luke 15:32 NLT (http://bible.com/116/luk.15.32.NLT)

Substitute “mom” for brother and that’s how the dogs act when I come in after being gone. It doesn’t matter if I was gone for 15 minutes or a couple of weeks. It’s time for the to celebrate when I walk in the door! It’s a tiny example of the rejoicing that happens in heaven when we return to God’s arms. He is always there, waiting for us to open the door and walk in. So where are you today? Have you left His comfort and His embrace to do your own thing? Life is short, people.  When I was in my twenties, I doubted I would see 50. In my thirties, I seriously doubted I would see 50. In fact, I was sure of it. How could I survive what I was doing? God obviously wasn’t done with me yet, because I’m 65 and still kicking. I don’t know His plan, but I try to stay open to His leading. How are you doing? Struggling to do it yourself way, or submitting to His will?

Just askin’….

(😆 I am shamelessly showing how cute these two are to me!)

Amen!

Christmas Is Coming

This is what Christmas is all about:

“So the Word became human {flesh} and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing Love and Faithfulness. And we have seen His Glory, the Glory of the Father’s One and Only Son.

John testified about Him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the One I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me Who is far greater than I am, for He existed long before me.’”

From His abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.  For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing Love and Faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is Himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The LAMB OF GOD Who takes away the sin of the world!” – John 1:14‭-‬18‭, ‬29 NLT  (http://bible.com/116/jhn.1.14-29.NLT)

Our God, the Creator of this incredibly complex universe, left heaven and came to earth. His sole purpose was to provide us salvation from our sin-filled lives. Think on that for today.

Saved by Grace

Saved by Grace

For many people, the thought of being saved because of God’s love just isn’t enough. We feel the need to do something to redeem ourselves. How could a man who has everything – eternal life, riches beyond measure, countless angels and beings to worship Him and adore Him, give it all up just for me? I’m a selfish, stubborn little human who is as flawed and imperfect as anyone ever born. I forsook family and friends to pursue my desires; I continually stumble and fall in relationships and life. I am not, and never will be, a “good” person. But hear this:

“God saved you by His Grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a Gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” – Ephesians 2:8‭-‬9 NLT (http://bible.com/116/eph.2.8-9.NLT

Let me put this in a slightly different format:

God saved me by His Grace when I believed. And I can’t take credit for this; it is a Gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things I have done, so I cannot boast about it.”

Too many times, boasting is exactly what we do. I succeeded; I accomplished; I, I, I …. I should get what I deserve. What have I really done? In truth, if each of us received what we truly deserve, it would not be the awards and accolades that we want. Instead, if every thought and every deed were to come to light, what rewards should we have? I thank GOD – I mean really thank God – that I don’t have to receive the punishment for all of the stupid, vile, insensitive, mean things I think and do as a human being of free will! To imagine that the Son of the Most High God voluntarily left Paradise to come to earth for the purpose of suffering and dying just for me…. just for you….. how humbling is that?

For the Son of Man [Jesus Christ] came to seek and save those who are lost.” – Luke 19:10 NLT (http://bible.com/116/luk.19.10.NLT)

One more word for those who don’t believe that Jesus is necessary to salvation:You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.” – James 2:19 NLT (http://bible.com/116/jas.2.19.NLT)

Don’t let the enemy drag you down! The Name of Jesus is the only way we have to vanquish the enemy. “…. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” – 1 Corinthians 6:11b NLT (http://bible.com/116/1co.6.11.NLT)

AMEN.

Roots

“Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” – Colossians 2:7 NLT (http://bible.com/116/col.2.7.NLT)

Growing up a “PK” – preacher’s kid – gave me the opportunity to grow roots deep into the scriptures. Many afternoons and weekends were spent with my parents and siblings at the church, preparing for the Sunday and Wednesday services. We “helped” by straightening classrooms and turning the crank on the mimeograph machine so we could help fold the bulletins. I expect we (the kids) spent more time playing than anything, but to me at least it’s always been a good memory to hold on to. There’s a distinct smell associated to older woodframed buildings and offices; a havemixture of wood and dust and warm sunlight, paper and inks. The sounds are uniquely theirs, too. A creaky floorboard, the squeak of a hinge, footsteps echoing down the empty hall; the silence – only it isn’t really silent after all. Sitting all alone in a hard wooden pew in a quiet sanctuary, watching as the dust motes dance in a sunbeam that is reflecting through the old imperfect glass promotes a reverence that is difficult to duplicate.

As viewed by some, I had a deprived childhood, but I don’t see it that way. For all of the sibling rivalry and lack of creature “comforts”, I don’t remember going without something to eat and a warm place to sleep every night. We did things as a family, even when it was a battle between my brother and I! My roots are deep in family and God.  ”

Some people (like me!) have to learn things the hard way. Why, when we grow up hearing and knowing the truth do we have to rebel? It’s all about that pesky free will God bestowed on us. Ever the gentleman, He refuses to force Himself on anyone who doesn’t choose Him. Too bad more men and women don’t follow His lead! I’m thankful for roots that were deep enough to keep me from getting swept away by the enemy during my rebellious years. Even today, I’m not a great conformist…. okay, I’m a lousy conformist who loves to argue and do things her way, sometimes to my detriment. The good news – the BEST news – is that God doesn’t give up on us easily. He loves us in spite of ourselves, and He is always waiting to give us a hand out of whatever mess we’ve gotten ourselves into.

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loves us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:37‭-‬39 NLT (http://bible.com/116/rom.8.37-39.NLT

AMEN.

O Our GOD

“O our God, we thank You and praise Your Glorious Name!” – 1 Chronicles 29:13 NLT  (http://bible.com/116/1ch.29.13.NLT)

I have so much to be thankful for and to praise GOD for! Think about this: Following Jesus is an oxymoron at times. I thought for years that in order to follow Christ I had to give up something. I was right – I had to give up my life to Him. I thought I had to give up everything that was “fun”…and I did. Ironically, I didn’t give up anything, because I GAINED everything! I gave up my life, only to gain ultimate Life. I gave up partying and chaos, and I gained PEACE – the kind of Peace you’ll never understand without Him. I gave up control, and gained understanding that I was never in control in the first place! I gave up “fun”, and found better fun and enjoyment, the kind that isn’t fleeting, but lasts.

Jesus said “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

Life can be as great as we can handle if we let God have the reins (or the wheel 😊). Nothing and no one can destroy us when we are in Christ. In this life, there will always be pressures and struggles of all kinds. That’s because the enemy has temporary control over the earth. He does NOT have control over me any longer. I slip and I fall constantly, like I’ve done all my life. I don’t have to struggle back to my feet, pulling myself up, any longer.  I just reach out my hand, and my Lord is waiting with outstretched hand to help me up again. He’s waiting for you to reach out for Him, too.
That’s a lot to be thankful for.
